At the invitation of Mayor John McArdle of the City of Independence, Oregon, I, alongside Sanctuary Stage, undertook the creation of an original bilingual play that explored and celebrated the lives, experiences, and challenges faced by Latino families within the community. This initiative was a collaborative effort involving the City of Independence, the Department of Latino Outreach, and local residents.
The project was deeply rooted in community engagement and participatory storytelling. It began with extensive outreach to residents, fostering an inclusive space where their stories, traditions, and perspectives could be authentically represented. Through a series of interviews, story circles, and workshops, we worked closely with community members to ensure the play reflected the cultural richness and lived realities of Latino families in Independence.
The creative process was enriched by the contributions of local artists, musicians, and residents, who brought their unique voices and talents to the production. A live band provided an integral musical component, weaving traditional and contemporary elements into the narrative to enhance the storytelling and create a dynamic, immersive theatrical experience.
This bilingual production not only highlighted the diversity and resilience of the Latino community but also fostered a deeper understanding and dialogue among residents of all backgrounds. By merging professional artistry with community-driven narratives, the project served as a testament to the power of theater as a tool for cultural celebration, social connection, and transformative storytelling.
