TANGO MIKE
Location: Albany/Corvallis, OR
Co-Creator/Community Liaison/Co-Director

An original play that delves into the lives and experiences of Willamette Valley veterans and their families who grapple with the profound and lasting impacts of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Through its heartfelt narrative and community-driven origins, the play seeks to shed light on the challenges, resilience, and intricate dynamics within families affected by military service and its aftermath. The development of Tango Mike was rooted in a rigorous and compassionate process of community engagement. The script was informed by interviews and story circles with veterans and their families, providing an authentic and multifaceted perspective on life after military service. These personal narratives were further enriched by collaborations with organizations dedicated to supporting veterans, including the National Guard Family Alliance, Love Our Vets, and The Counseling Center in Salem, Oregon.
The play integrates these real-life experiences into a narrative that is both deeply personal and universally resonant, offering audiences a window into the challenges faced by veterans and their families while fostering empathy and understanding. The title, Tango Mike—military phonetic shorthand for "Thanks Much"—reflects the play's underlying themes of gratitude, service, and the complicated journey toward healing.
Through its creation and performance, Tango Mike not only honors the sacrifices of veterans and their families but also serves as a catalyst for dialogue about PTSD, mental health, and the need for community support. It exemplifies the transformative potential of theater to address critical social issues and foster meaningful connections within and beyond the community.
